Though many of us are now sadly saying our goodbyes to our beautiful summer gardens, one of the most exciting things about the end of summer, is planning for the next Spring.
For those of us looking to have a beautiful Spring garden, Fall is the time to start planting those bulbs. Spring flowering bulbs are a great way to get an early pop of color after a not-so-colorful winter. Some of the most popular spring flowering bulbs include Hyacinths, Spring Snowflakes, and Tulips. To help you get started right with your bulbs, below are some tips for planting!
In most cases, bulbs are quite adaptable to soil and environment conditions, making them easy to grow in many areas of the yard. While most bulbs do prefer a sunny location, there are some that do better in shade. If you are looking for a really early flower, the earliest bulb is the Crocus.
Space bulbs equally apart from each other. The larger the bulb, the more space needed. Give extra space if planting other flowers between bulbs.
Add bone meal to your soil. Bone meal is rich in slow release organic phosphorous, which helps fuel strong initial root development and later flower production.
Planting bulbs with the “top” end up will help them to easily grow upright.
Most bulbs prefer soil in the neutral pH range. Test your soil pH and if needed, adjust accordingly. Add Fast Acting™ Lime to raise soil pH, and Fast Acting Sulfur® to lower soil pH.
