Whether you're new to lawn and garden care, or even a seasoned expert, you may not realize the critical role that healthy soil plays in the development of healthy plants. And that's okay! Healthy soil is at the core of what we do, and we design our products to help your soil be its best. Let's take a look at why it's so important, and how you can improve your soil by taking just a few simple steps.
When a soil environment is working best, it fosters a diverse population of beneficial microbes that feed and support your lawn or garden. Just a single teaspoon of healthy soil contains between 100 million and one billion beneficial bacteria – in one acre of healthy soil, the top six inches will contain up to 23,000 pounds of microbes!
In order for those microbes to survive and thrive, a soil must be rich in organic matter – a critical carbon source that fuels healthy microbial populations.
Research suggests levels of organic matter are declining in many areas. Poor soil management practices and the over-use of pesticides and synthetic fertilizers are devastating to microbial populations that help create healthy soil.
The lawns and gardens of newly constructed homes are most notorious for poor soil. This is because the topsoil (which contains healthy organic matter) is removed during construction to form a stable construction base. The subsoil from basement excavation (which is low in organic matter) is then often spread over the rest of the yard when construction is complete, leaving a yard of soil that's less than ideal for growing anything.
Earth Science Makes it Easy to Support a Healthy Soil Environment
Earth Science products are designed to deliver organic matter to your soil with every application. Our proprietary “upcycling” process turns raw dairy manure into fertilizer that feeds your plants and soil.
Slow-release nitrogen fertilizer is the basis for all Earth Science products. It lasts longer than quick-release fertilizer, encourages more uniform, natural growth, is better for the environment, and won't burn your
lawn and other plants.
Earth Science does not include pesticides, fungicides, or herbicides in any of our products. Instead, we focus on creating products that foster healthy soils to grow vigorous plants that are naturally more resistant to pests, weeds, and stressful conditions.
